monarch day metro parks

On Saturday, September 6, 2014 from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Blendon Woods will host the Annual Monarch Day.  The festival celebrates the 2,000 mile journey of the monarch butterfly and will feature live butterflies, displays, videos and more.  This event is free and open to all

The schedule for the day includes:

  • 10 am–3 pm. Capture and tag butterflies. View monarchs in the Monarch Mansion. Learn how to set up your own backyard butterfly garden.
  • Noon – 3 pm Children’s activities: migration game, puppet show, crafts and more will go on continuously.
  • Noon – 3 pm Hobbyist Kevin Clark will bring his big, scary moth caterpillars and teach you how to handle them.
  • 1 p.m. Learn the intricacies of a monarch’s life cycle and see live butterflies and caterpillars.
  • 2 p.m. Learn of the challenges faced by the declining monarch population and how you can help their recovery.
  • 3 p.m. Help release monarchs for their migration to Mexico.
